Tennessee Williams

"The primary reason that honesty is most often practiced by women has to do with the fact that they are unique in having more than a passing acquaintance with it. I think that women honor honesty so passionately because they have experienced it so often and so fully: It has been used cruelly against them to explain why they are allegedly inferior and how they can best be effective; it has been denied them when they have asked why things are done as they are; it has been thrown around like a feather at a cockfight when affection or dedication or patriotism has been extolled. Women have watched since the dawn of time as honesty has been maligned, praised, soiled. They know its power. They know when it's genuine. And even when they decide to be fooled by the dishonesty of someone they love or need or crave, they are never dishonest with themselves: They know the lies they live. This is why I try to always live on the perimeter of women: They know where the truth lies. You can play with that sentence as you wish."
~Tennessee Williams/Interview with James Grissom/1982
