"Agnus Dei" - "VOCES8"

 

Samuel Barber compôs esta peça como o andamento lento de um quarteto de cordas e, posteriormente, fez-lhe um arranjo para orquestra. 

A estreia teve lugar a 5 de Novembro de 1938, em Nova Iorque, sob a direção de Arturo Toscanini, numa transmissão radiofónica da NBC. Barber tinha 28 anos e acabara de oferecer ao século uma das peças que este viria a reproduzir em silêncio.

O VOCES8 foi fundado em 2003 e refundado em 2005 pelos irmãos Barnaby e Paul Smith. É composto por oito cantores. Em 2023, foram nomeados para um Grammy pelo álbum The Lost Birds. 

Gravam em casa: no VOCES8 Centre, inaugurado em 2013 no interior da igreja de St Anne & St Agnes, em Londres, e foi aí que esta gravação foi feita, com Barnaby Smith também a assumir a produção de som. 

O grupo canta em oito vozes: duas sopranos, duas contraltos, dois tenores, um barítono e um baixo. Não há distinção entre solista e acompanhamento e é isso que deixa cada linha à vista.
