'It makes one feel insignificant'

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew to serve your turn long after they are gone, and so hold on when there is nothing in you except the will which says to them: 'Hold on!'... you’ll be a Man

Rudyard Kipling

Random words of the Brontë sisters

“What a fool you must be," said my head to my heart, or my sterner to my softer self.”
      ― Anne Brontë, Agnes Grey

“The first day of January always presents to my mind a train of very solemn and important reflections and a question more easily asked than answered frequently occurs viz: How have I improved the past year and with [what] good intentions do I view the dawn of its successor?”
     ― Charlotte Brontë, Lettere

Here pause: pause at once. There is enough said. Trouble no quiet, kind heart; leave sunny imaginations hope. Let ir be their to conceive the delight of joy born again fresh out of great terror, the rapture of rescue from peril, the wondrous reprieve from dread, the fruition of return. Let them picture union and a happy succeeding life.
     ― Charlotte Brontë, Lettere

Life appears to me too short to be spent in nursing animosity or registering wrongs. We are, and must be, one and all, burdened with faults in this world; but the time will soon come when, I trust, we shall put them off in putting off our corruptible bodies; when debasement and sun will fall from us with this cumbrous frame of flesh, and only the spark of the spirit will remain, the impalpable principle of life and thought, pure as when it left the Creator to inspire the creature.”
     ― Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

“It is vain to say human beings ought to be satisfied with tranquility; they must have action; and they will make it if they cannot find it.”
     ― Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

A slice of prose

Lord Hidetora Ichimonji:
In a mad world, only the mad are sane.

Lord Hidetora Ichimonji:
What madness have I spoken? Wherein lies my senility?

Saburonaotora Ichimonji:
I'll tell you. What kind of world do we live in? One barren of loyalty and feeling.

Lord Hidetora Ichimonji:
I'm aware of that.

Saburonaotora Ichimonji:
So you should be! You spilled an ocean of blood. You showed no mercy, no pity. We too are children of this age... weaned on strife and chaos. We are your sons, yet you count on our fidelity. In my eyes, that makes you a fool. A senile old fool!

Kurogane:
Saburo is not our only enemy.

Jiromasatora Ichimonji
: So what? If they attack, we retaliate. We grab their land and enlarge our own.

Kurogane
: Fine words, but words don't win wars.

Lord Hidetora Ichimonji
: The Great Lord goes nowhere alone.

Jiromasatora Ichimonji
: You renounced your power. You have no need of an escort.

Lord Hidetora Ichimonji
: Only the birds and the beasts live in solitude.

Tango
: Men prefer sorrow over joy... suffering over peace!

Time

“The universe is a dark forest. Every civilization is an armed hunter stalking through the trees like a ghost, gently pushing aside branches that block the path and trying to tread without sound.

Make time for life, or life won’t make time.”

― Liu Cixin, The Dark Forest

A fool I was to sleep at noon,
And wake when night is chilly
