Creation of God (2017) by Afro-Cuban American artist, Harmonia Rosales, born in 1984.
Oil on Belgian linen - 122 x 152 cm - Muskegon Museum of Art, Michigan, USA
By subverting Michelangelo’s well-known fresco, Rosales paints Black female empowerment into history, and simultaneously challenges hegemonic systems of belief. Created for her first solo exhibition Black Imaginary To Counter Hegemony in 2017, the painting visualizes Rosales’s underlying challenge throughout her body of work.
